FINKELSTEIN (b. 1953) is an American political scientist and activist whose primary fields of research are the politics of the Holocaust and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The son of Holocaust survivors, Finkelstein received his doctorate from Princeton University, where his early research set the stage for a lifetime of challenging mainstream historical narratives. He is a fierce critic of Israeli policy and its governing class, and was barred from entry to the country for ten years in 2008. BEYOND CHUTZPAH: ON THE MISUSE OF ANTI-SEMITISM AND THE ABUSE OF HISTORY (2005) served as an exhaustive critique of Alan Dershowitz’s defense of Israel and analyzed the human rights record in the Palestinian territories. In THE RISE AND FALL OF PALESTINE: A PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF THE INTIFADA YEARS (1996), Finkelstein chronicled his visits to the West Bank during the First Intifada. Through personal accounts, he compares the plight of the Palestinians living under the Israeli occupation with the horrors of the Nazis.
