The story begins with Alison Willetts, a survivor of a failed murder attempt. She has been left in a locked-in syndrome, unable to express herself. Alison’s predicament poses a chilling thought: a living death. Her voice is a pivotal element in the narrative, shared through her thoughts as she lays trapped in her body. Thorne investigates the murders of three young women. He suspects they were mere stepping stones for the killer’s final masterpiece: Alison. Thorne pairs up with Alison’s doctor, Anne Coburn, who becomes increasingly important. This relationship complicates the investigation; Anne’s personal ties to the case challenge Thorne’s objectivity. The reader is drawn into the ethical dilemmas that arise when personal and professional lives collide. As Thorne digs deeper, he becomes obsessed with the case and the killer’s mind.
