A fae assassin must infiltrate the ranks of a nefarious crime syndicate to restore peace in her city in the fourth book of this epic portal fantasy series.
After saving Killic from its greatest peril to date, fae assassin SJ is ready for some much-needed rest, but the call to duty soon comes knocking again. As riots stir in the streets of Asterfal, halting the chancellor’s rebuilding efforts, he begins to suspect there’s something rotten brewing in the city’s tenth district. Its buildings are dilapidated, its streets are unsafe, and its people are starving—and it’s up to SJ to get to the bottom of it.
Now, plunged into the kingdom’s most dangerous slums, SJ finds herself in the middle of a complex web of political corruption and criminal warfare. A pair of rival gangs are plotting something big, and it starts with inciting unrest among the city’s most vulnerable. If SJ hopes to have any chance of unravelling their conspiratorial plot, she’ll need the help of an even more experienced hitman, Carlito, who was contracted to execute her not long ago.
Carlito’s intimate knowledge of the syndicates’ inner workings and leadership prove invaluable to their mission, and they set aside their differences to take down their most elusive opponents yet. But as they infiltrate enemy barracks and attempt to tear them down from the inside, SJ’s levelling up at an unprecedented rate. With her skill status tied to the world’s border expansions, her latest progress leaves new areas around Killic completely vulnerable to attack.
And with more and more defenseless territories popping up, a new monstrous threat lies in wait, prepared to destroy all that SJ and her allies have built thus far . . .
