The game emphasizes careful strategy and positioning, featuring a complex system that includes elevation effects, attacks of opportunity, ranged and melee combat, and flanking mechanics. With up to 18 mercenaries on the battlefield, each battle demands thoughtful planning and adaptation to the unique combat styles of ten rival factions. Progression in Dead Monarchy revolves around recruiting and training your mercenaries, each with their own backgrounds and weapon proficiencies that influence their fighting style. Players can customize their fighters extensively, choosing from over 180 perks and abilities and equipping them with historically inspired armor, helmets, and a wide variety of weapons. The game also features permanent death for your mercenaries, raising the stakes in every encounter. Beyond mercenary contracts, you can pursue the path of arena champion, battling increasingly formidable foes across five arenas to rise through the ranks.
