Etrom: The Astral Essence 20th Anniversary Edition is a distinctive point-and-click action RPG set in a dark, dystopian future where fragmented societies are separated not only by walls but by laws, secrets, and the mysterious Void Lands. The game unfolds in a grim, futuristic Middle Ages where arcane rituals, endless conflicts, and battles with techno-mystical weapons shape the world. Players assume the role of Etrom, a former elite soldier turned fugitive who is drawn by the enigmatic call of the Astral Essence. As Etrom, you explore hostile cities, ancient civilizations, and otherworldly realms to uncover hidden truths about the Astral Essence and your own past. The game’s expansive world is filled with intricate rituals, secret plots, and dark magic, creating a rich narrative tapestry that invites deep exploration. Gameplay in Etrom blends traditional point-and-click mechanics with intense, strategic combat. Players face a variety of enemies—from human foes to monsters and extradimensional beings—using a range of powerful Astral Powers such as Meteor and Lightning Storm. The choices made throughout the game influence the story’s outcome, offering seven possible endings and allowing Etrom to transform into formidable forms like a Demon, Draconian Guardian, or Abyssal Knight. Additionally, players can pilot war mechs for tactical battles that add a unique layer of complexity. With over 70 large environments and roughly 50 hours of gameplay, the 20th Anniversary Edition also features an enhanced English dialogue by acclaimed sci-fi writers and includes the first episode of an accompanying novel. While the game employs a proprietary control scheme that was innovative yet divisive at release, it remains a compelling experience for those interested in a dark, atmospheric RPG with a cult legacy.
