  • Aaron Swartz - Collected Works (5 books) AARON SWARTZ (1986–2013) was an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, writer, political organizer, and Internet hacktivist. A co-founder of Reddit, a co-creator of the RSS web feed format, and a primary architect of Creative Commons, Swartz possessed a rare technical genius matched by an unwavering moral compass. He is rightly credited as a martyr and a prodigy, especially in our community, and much of his work focused on civic awareness and progressive activism. He was inducted posthumously into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013. On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by MIT police after connecting a computer to the university's network in an unlocked closet and setting it to download a large number of academic journal articles from JSTOR. He was charged with two counts of wire fraud and eleven violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines, 35 years in prison, asset forfeiture, restitution, and supervised release. Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would have served six months in federal prison, but would have been forced to plead guilty to federal felonies. Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead by hanging in his Brooklyn apartment. Following his suicide, Swartz's family and girlfriend created a memorial website on which they wrote: "He used his prodigious skills as a programmer and technologist not to enrich himself but to make the Internet and the world a fairer, better place." Besides being a technical genius and a passionate activist, Swartz was an insatiable writer who used the digital canvas to critique power structures, question institutional dogmas, and advocate for the democratic distribution of human knowledge. In 2008, he authored the widely circulated GUERILLA OPEN ACCESS MANIFESTO that argues for transgressive approaches to achieving the goals of the open access movement through civil disobedience, willful violation of copyright and contracts that restrict redistribution of knowledge, and activities that exist in legal grey areas. He famously wrote: "Sharing isn't immoral — it's a moral imperative." His collected writings are available in two volumes, both published posthumously. They reveal a thinker who refused to accept standard societal narratives, instead using data and historical context to challenge readers to think critically about who benefits from existing systems of control. THE BOY WHO COULD CHANGE THE WORLD (2015) organizes his essays, blog posts, and speeches into thematic sections that trace his intellectual evolution, and serves as a comprehensive testament to his eclectic mind and relentless curiosity. Swartz tackles complex subjects like public education, institutional corruption, copyright law, and media manipulation with accessible clarity. In addition, five months before his death, he completed RAW THOUGHT, RAW NERVE (2014), a compilation o
