Learn to label fields, handle errors and test with a screen reader. What you'll learn Understand how HTML and ARIA affect the way screen readers identify and describe form controls. Connect labels, instructions and descriptions to form fields using appropriate HTML and ARIA techniques. Group related form controls so users can understand both the individual choices and their shared purpose. Use autocomplete, required-field indicators and character-limit information to help people complete forms. Implement accessible inline validation that identifies errors and explains how to correct them. Build error summaries that help users discover problems and navigate directly to fields that need attention. Test form behaviour with a keyboard, screen reader and browser accessibility tools to identify issues and verify fixes. Requirements Practical experience with HTML, CSS and building web forms. You should be comfortable reading and editing form markup and inspecting elements in browser developer tools. JavaScript is provided for the relevant exercises, allowing you to focus on the accessibility of the generated HTML and the resulting form behaviour rather than writing the scripts yourself. Familiarity with Chrome developer tools. You should be comfortable inspecting HTML and investigating how a page behaves. The course will introduce the accessibility-specific inspection techniques used in the lessons. You do not need to be an accessibility specialist. The course explains the accessibility concepts behind each implementation, helping you apply your existing development skills to building more accessible forms. A computer with a keyboard, a modern browser and an internet connection. You’ll use these to work with the CodePen examples. Access to a screen reader is needed to practise the screen reader testing techniques yourself. An understanding of Javascript is helpful as I'll show what an accessible implementation needs to achieve, not how to write every part of that implementation from scratch.
