Year: 1979 Country: United States Director: Su Friedrich Cast: Sally Eckhoff, Jennifer MacDonald, Rose Maurer, Marty Pottenger IMDB: Link Language : English In today's world, where gender discrimination is by no means a thing of the past, art can—and indeed should—continue to be a powerful tool for making women's voices heard around the world. For decades, feminist art has been used precisely to break down stereotypes associated with women and achieve gender equality. It is the late 1960s, and the whole world is calling for change. Protests against the Vietnam War are becoming increasingly widespread and passionate. Civil rights movements are expressing a strong and shared sentiment. It is within this climate of tremendous upheaval that we can trace the origins of the feminist art movement. Amid widespread dissatisfaction, the first feminist artists began to make their voices heard, seeking to rewrite the history of art—which, until then, had been falsely dominated by men. Their goal: to influence cultural attitudes and transform stereotypes, and to create spaces and opportunities in the art world for women who, until then, had none. These were the foundations that gave rise to the activist art of the 1980s. “Harness” art to offer viewers a female perspective on society, with the aim of reducing gender inequality. To promote female artists in the art world and on the art market, which until then had been almost entirely reserved for male artists. To use new media and materials previously associated exclusively with the female sphere to expand the definition of fine arts and incorporate a wider variety of artistic perspectives. While the feminist movement is undoubtedly characterized by the wide variety of media it employs, performance art and body art have taken on particular importance since the 1970s. Performance art has been—and continues to be—widely utilized by feminist artists because of its ability to communicate a physical and visceral message in a powerful and direct way, drawing on the impact of a “face-to-face” encounter with the viewer. For the same reasons, Body Art has also always lent itself perfectly to the goals of feminist artists, and the two mediums have often been used simultaneously. Video art, viewed as a potential tool for sparking a media revolution, has been another key medium for artists in the feminist movement. The portrayal of the female body and female sexuality continues to be politically charged and to reflect the tension between personal and public identity.
