IMDb (7.0/10) | Rotten Tomatoes Genres Animation, Action, Crime Directors Mamoru Oshii, Kôji Sawai Writers Masami Yûki, Kazunori Itô, Mamoru Oshii Actors Toshio Furukawa, David Jarvis, Doug Erholtz Plot Summary The screwball cops of Special Vehicles Section 2 Division 2 must investigate and stop a spree of rampaging construction robots. Note from Encoder Patlabor: The Movie (1989) — original title 機動警察パトレイバー 劇場版 (Kidō Keisatsu Patoreibā Gekijō-ban). Mamoru Oshii’s theatrical debut for the franchise leans hard into political tension and near-future realism, clearly signaling the more thoughtful, atmospheric direction he would later perfect. A neat bit of trivia: this film is often seen as the point where Oshii began transitioning Patlabor away from standard mecha action toward the philosophical, society-focused storytelling that would later define Ghost in the Shell. Even on first watch, that shift is hard to miss. Media Information Code:
